Video games are not only a means to entertain, but also to educate. Ubisoft, which has dipped into educational games before with titles like My Spanish Coach, Imagine Teach and Brain Challenge, has decided to go a step further by teaming up with Handicap International to create Handigo the Game for Handicap International’s “AbilityTogether” awareness campaign. It is a “serious” game, one designed to entertain, but also to help normal experience what it is like for people who have to live everyday with various handicaps. The game is also presented in English, French and German, so a wide audience can experience it.

Handigo, a collection of three mini-games which each deal with a different kind of impairment, is a free, browser-based flash game. The first mini-game puts you in the shoes of Rigoligo, who is blind. You have to help her navigate her way to her friend Rochango, past inconsiderate pedestrians, cars and other obstacles before time runs out. The second game has wheelchair-bound Speedigo racing through an obstacle course to meet up with Rochango. The final game stars Reflectigo, who has a mental handicap. You have to get the item shown on the right, however his handicap sometimes make objects move or turn different colors.

There is also a Learn to Read Braille title. In it, you’ll be presented with letters of the alphabet in Braille to memorize. You then will have to press the correct keyboard key to identify it.
