First Impressions: Raven Squad: Operation Hidden Danger at PAX 08

Raven Squad
While I was at PAX 08, I saw a demo of South Peak’s Raven Squad: Operation Hidden Danger. I was surprised that this game was not getting the attention that it should be getting.

Raven Squad is a hybrid of first-person shooter and strategy genres resulting in a rare and distinct mix. You play as two squads of four soldiers, with each soldier having a unique specialty. For example, one soldier is a sniper, one is an explosives master and all these talents work together for the good of the mission.

As the left half of the above image shows, the game has all the ingredients for an exciting FPS. The player has the option of going into the strategy mode with a birds-eye view, which is exemplified by the right half of the image. It is up to the player to toggle between FPS and strategy modes - and the two different squads - in order to succeed on the missions.

I got to try it out, and would have to say that Raven Squad is unique, considering that most video games play like other successful games of their type. It is refreshing to see a game that tries to rewrite the book on gameplay.

At first I thought that Raven Squad was just a game that uses missions with no sense of connected purpose but the game has a well-developed back story. The game takes place in a world of great economic ruin and these missions are about stopping a warlord in Brazil who seeks domination. So there is a reason for all these missions and a realistic end-goal.

In short, this game looks fun, challenging, and unique. Raven Squad: Operation Hidden Danger will be available in late Fall 2008 or Spring 2009.
