Firsthand look at the Fallout 3 Booth at PAX 08

gamertell pax08 penny arcade expo fallout 3 boothEven though we teased Fallout 3’s presence at PAX 08, I was able to get a firsthand look at the Fallout 3 booth at the expo. Bethesda Software had one of the biggest gamer magnets at the Penny Arcade Expo this year.

It was tough getting through the crowd (which is where a media badge comes in handy). When I saw Fallout 3 being demoed, I didn’t think much of it. To me, it felt like another ultra-violent shooter game in a post-apocalyptic world that has done to death.

However, I was able talk to one of the game creators about it and he told me about some of the game’s unique attributes. The first is that you get to see your character be born and leave the nest and age 18.

And by the nest he is referring to Vault 101, an underground facility that houses a group of humans after the global thermal nuclear war of 2077. I managed to pick up the Vault Dweller’s Survival Guide at the booth, which gave an idea of the type of world this game takes place in.

Apparently, the world of 2077 was much like the world of 1957. The Vault Dweller’s Survival Guide eerily reminded me of the Duck and Cover parody cartoon with Burt the Turtle. It appears that Burt has been replaced by Vault-boy, the mascot of the apocalyptic world, who informs you how to survive on the outside. His instructions are to avoid radiation, fit in to the new world, watch out for strange creatures, and other end of the world advice for survival.

This game is more than just shooting-to-survive. In fact, the game gives you the opportunity to be as good or evil as you like in this Mad Mad Mad Max World. For example, you can act as a scientist and do things for the good of humanity, or you could be the scourge and shoot anyone who gets in your way.

You should be able to pick up Fallout 3 for the PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 in October 2008.
