Companies claim British game degrees useless

gameartSo you wanna work with video games, eh? Well, then don’t get a degree in computer games.

Britain’s huge gaming industry has put universities under major attack for failing to equip students for work while handing out their gaming degrees. According to The Daily Mail UK, several of the country’s top firms go so far as to say that the schools are offering “mouse degrees with little job relevance.” Ouch. Hope the students didn’t pay too much for those Mouse degrees because Jamie MacDonald, VP of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios Europe said, “I can’t remember the last time I employed someone from them.”

Still, the number of computer gaming degrees on offer in Britain has doubled in the past several years to more than 80. Even so, many of the leading firms feel that the courses lack necessary computing, math, art and animation skills. Well, maybe they teach them some kick-butt codes to beat level 10 in… OK, I’m being sarcastic.

Once a force to contend with (after all, they brought us Laura Croft of Tomb Raider), Britain seems to be losing it’s grasp on the global games market.

So, I guess if you are looking to get into the gaming field, don’t do it by attending school for it. At least not in Britain. I wonder if instead of graduation caps they throw their mouse ears up into the air?
