Repeat Rumor: Xbox 360 to get external Blu-ray drive

gamertell xbox 360 hd hard drive failRemember when the Xbox 360 had that external high definition DVD drive that nobody wanted and eventually became the most expensive paper weight ever?

It seems Microsoft is learning from its mistakes, rescinding its claim to not make a Blu-ray drive and preparing to cash in on the Blu-ray craze. GamesIndustryBiz is reporting that Microsoft has contracted Toshiba-Samsung Storage Technology Corp to manufacture the device with a rumored price between $100 and $150.

Since Microsoft discontinued the HD-DVD player, rumors have been swirling for the longest about the possibility of integrating Blu-ray technology with the Xbox 360. If the Xbox 360 actually does create a Blu-ray player that could possibly be bundled with the cheaper Microsoft console, the company could have a huge win this holiday season.

When consumers go to the store to decide between the cheaper Xbox 360 and the pricey PS3, they may have a tougher choice choosing a system with Blu-ray being an option for both console. However, this is merely speculation as no date has been given for release and it’s already October 2008. The turnaround on something like a new Blue-ray device takes time.
