Comic Con 2009: A closer look at Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth for DS

edgeworth_logoCapcom’s Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth is the newest in the Ace Attorney series. You will recognize Edgeworth from the first game, as the rival (and friend) of Phoenix Wright. This time he is the main character and you control him through out the game. I was lucky enough to give the game a go at Comic Con 2009.

edgeworth_screenshot_1I noticed right away that this game was different than its predecessors. You still click on items to view them more closely and you can still talk to people about the case but, instead of the first-person view we are use to, this one is all third-person and you can move Edgeworth around the screen.

The game starts with a man lying dead of a bullet wound in, of all places, Edgeworth’s office. Edgy is as confused as everyone else as to how the body got there and the investigation begins. The first person I was able to talk to was a rather familiar face, Detective Gumshoe! As always, Edgy and him but heads but are still forced to work together. Gumshoe follows you around in the game and you can consult with him about various findings.

Another new element to the game is the ability to combine logic to form ideas. When you find a piece of evidence, or find out something about the event (such as that the dead man was actually a detective), the ideas go into the “logic” space. You have to combine logics that fit together to come up with a better idea of what happened. Of course, if you incorrectly piece together logic, you lose points via a green bar at the top of the screen. You should remember the green bar from the other Ace Attorney games.

Unfortunately, you no longer go to court to try the case in this game. However, you do still interrogate suspects and witnesses to find out what happened. (Of course, the game I played was not the full build.) Despite the fact that there are no court room interactions, he game was still a lot of fun, and any fan of the series will want to try it out.
