As you can see from the above photo I took at PAX 08, someone has given Valve’s upcoming game, Left 4 Dead, the finger. Or, more accurately, the thumb.
As I mentioned in a previous article, there was quite a line to this game. It was so large, that I couldn’t even find the person that I wanted to talk to. I knew that I had to write at least one article on it, though.
Left 4 Dead takes place during that time that we all know is coming, when zombies walk the Earth. What makes the game different from other zombie invasion games is that this isn’t a first-person shooter game where you go through the same environments every time you play, with the inevitable goal to “beat” the game.
No, new technology known as the AI Director generates a unique experience each time the game is played. Somehow, it can bring in “new monsters, sounds, and action as it tailors the gameplay experience based upon the team’s performance”.
Up to four players can take part in missions that usually about traveling from point to point. You have weapons, ammo, and health packs that allow you to defend yourselves against the armies of the living dead, and they will get used.
Much of the success of advancing in Left 4 Dead involves a lot of team based strategy. Each player can see the other’s character aura, which will turn red if engaged, and blue if not involved in combat.
Left 4 Dead will be available in November 2008 for both PC and Xbox 360.
